…Says:Encroachments threaten markets’ existence
A House of Assembly candidate for Ikeduru state constituency in the 2023 general elections, Dr Obinna Obi-Njoku Jr, has lauded Governor Hope Uzodinma for re-modeling the Ekeukwu Owerri Market in Owerri Municipal Council to international standard.
Dr Obi-Njoku Jr who had earlier congratulated Governor Uzodinma on the conferment of the award of Infrastructure Governor of the Year by Vanguard Newspaper recently, highlighted the important role of markets in the economic lives of citizens, adding that the redevelopment of Ekeukwu Owerri to a modern, model market by Governor Uzodinma underscores the governor’s steadfastness and commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises.
He emphasised the
imperative for traders to carry out their activities in a healthy and conducive environment with modern basic amenities.
He expressed delight that the re-modeled Ekeukwu Owerri market would enhance business activities and improve the welfare and health of traders as they would henceforth ply their trade under a conducive environment designed to accommodated them within the new market complex.
Dr Obi-Njoku Jr urged Governor Uzodinma to extend the same gesture to major markets in Ikeduru including Eke Atta, Afor Uzoagba, among other rural markets.
Reiterating the crucial role of markets in the economic lives of communities,
Obi-Njoku Jr also urged the local government councils to leverage the recent setting up of Community Development and Mobilisation committees in 27 LGAs of the state under the directive of the governor,
to check encroachments into lands belonging to community markets.
While also describing such encroachments as threat to the existence of the markets.
